Volunteer Intern Program
Please note that due to COVID-19, our internship program has been put on hold. If you would like to be considered for a volunteer position, please email info (at) pandosyvet.com expressing your interest.
Pandosy Village Veterinary Hospital is a fun and forward-thinking holistic dog/cat practice in Kelowna. Our volunteer intern program provides veterinary medicine hopefuls with a chance to be involved in a busy hospital from September to March. You'll spend time learning with us, assist with veterinary procedures, attend our professional development and social events, and did we mention... Snuggle puppies?
Our first intern Molly (above) was accepted into vet school after spending several months at our clinic (She got a glowing letter of reference from us!) Way to go, Molly! In the last three years, we've had other volunteers move on to vet school, other programs of study, jobs in vet clinics - and we've even had several of them work for us part-time when their volunteering positions were done.
Our volunteer program
Interested in becoming a veterinarian or working in a vet hospital? Intrigued by holistic medicine? Want to get valuable work experience and a great reference letter? Pandosy Village Veterinary Hospital's volunteer intern program might be perfect for you.
We will train you, provide specific volunteering opportunities in the heart of our hospital, include you on our professional development opportunities and social occasions, and write you a detailed reference letter at the end of the program.
Each volunteer shift, you will spend half your time cleaning and assisting in the basic functioning of the hospital, and half your shift learning new skills or shadowing the veterinarian, chiropractor and nurses.
Training
Our initial group training will be announced when dates are confirmed. At that time, you will learn the basics on how to:
- Hold animals for taking blood and shaving
- Position animals during Xrays
- Collect urine samples
- Keep the treatment area of the hospital pristinely clean (approximately 20-40% of your time)
- Enter stock into our system
- Wrap surgical packs and autoclave them
- and more!
Of course, it's during your internship that you will get to practice the skills and put them into action.
(Note that completely the initial training does not guarantee acceptance into our Sept-March program. We will select the successful applicants after the training session.)
Expectations
We expect you to
- complete the initial group training session
- commit to two 3 hour volunteering sessions per week, from September to May (with long weekends and holidays off, of course!)
- attend professional development training with our staff as you can
- complete the duties mentioned above under "training" with a positive attitude and a lust for learning
- be respectful, professional, attentive and friendly with our wonderful staff and fabulous clients
- have lots of fun!
