Keep your pets safe during fire season
We sent out this same emergency kit list earlier this spring, but with the recent fires in Okanagan Mountain Park, West Kelowna and Summerland/Peachland, we thought it might be helpful to resend. Big hugs out to all our friends who are packing up “just in case” today - let’s hope none of you need this list.
But just in case, a the Girl Guide motto says, it’s best to “be prepared.” Since our pets’ needs are some of the last things to be addressed when we are fleeing our homes, consider making up a little emergency grab and go kit for your pets as well, perhaps tucked into their carrier.
Your Pet Emergency Kit
A carrier ( super important if you end up at an emergency shelter centre or a hotel room that doesn’t usually accept pets.)
Sealed bottle of water per pet
Water / food bowl
2-3 days worth of food (if you feed frozen raw, then the freeze-dried equivalent)
2-3 days worth of medications (at Pandosy Village Vet, we always have these things on digital file, so unless it’s a Sunday or holiday, we can always get more for you)
A chew for dogs or catnip for cats (to help them relax in the surroundings)
A simple plastic litter tray and a ziplock full of litter for cats
A simple collar / harness and lead for dogs (in case their regular one gets left behind)
Microchipping & other important prep
Microchip your pet. This is the best way of insuring your pet can always be traced back to you. If you don’t have your pet microchipped, we can do this any day, just give us a shout. It’s also helpful to ensure all your pets always wear ID with your cell phone number, so if they do get out, they can be returned to you.
Make sure your pet is up to date with their vaccinations or titre tests, so if they do have to go spend time in a kennel, they will be accepted. We have digital records of their immunization, so we can always email the vaccine or titre test certificates to the kennel, no problem.
