Spay, Neuter and other Surgeries

Spay & Neuter Surgeries

Ovariohysterectomies and castrations are major surgeries. We take your pet's health very seriously; so each spay and neuter surgery has a fixed fee, and always includes:

  • a targeted pre-surgical consultation
  • the doctor and technician's time for the operation
  • pre-anesthesia blood work and IV fluids during the procedure (except for feline neuters)
  • anesthesia
  • nail trim, as needed
  • post-surgical care and recovery
  • post-surgical pain medication
  • a complementary laser therapy treatment to aid healing
  • a post-surgical follow-up consultation

Pre-anesthetic bloodwork & IV fluids

Anesthesia is a process where your best furry friends are "put under" during surgery so they are pain free and comfortable. Before anesthesia, we run bloodwork to look for any red flags that would suggest that we shouldn't do the surgery. It's a safety check before pets spend time under anesthesia. If the bloodwork doesn't check out, we postpone the surgery and address any outstanding health issues before proceeding.

During surgery, we place a catheter into your cat or dog's vein to support them and stabilize them during prolonged surgical time. Both of these are considered best practices in veterinary medicine, so they are the standard approach to care at our hospital.

The only exception to this approach is feline neuters - they are such quick surgeries and the tom cats spend so little time under anesthesia that the pre-anesthesia blood checks and IV fluids aren't necessary.

Complimentary Post-Surgical Laser Therapy

Because therapeutic laser treatment can dramatically and positively impact healing, we now include a complementary therapeutic laser treatment with every surgery and with more extensive dentistries when teeth are removed. We've seen an increase in healing time, and the comfort level of our patients.

How it works - after a surgery or dentistry, one of our wonderful nurses holds the patient while they wake from anesthesia. Another nurse passes the laser over the sutured surgical site, or the part of the mouth where a tooth has been removed. The laser creates a warm pleasant sensation for the patient, while kick-starting the healing process and calming inflammation, which in turn helps with pain control.

All surgeries and treatments require pre-surgical consultations to create estimates for the surgery, and to book time and resources appropriately. We will also discuss the optimal age of the surgery for different breeds, based on the newest available research.

Please note medically abnormal surgeries (cryptorchid, hernia, etc) have additional fees.
